WHAT TO EXPECT

Sit back, relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery of Milford Sound. This cruise departs from Te Anau, and if you're travelling from Queenstown, you'll get to enjoy all the sights along the way, before diving into your cruise experience.

Added extras like a glass-roof coach, multi-lingual commentary and specialist nature guides will make this trip one to remember. If you're worried of being hungry during the trip, Picnic Lunch is available for purchase for an extra $20. 

As you travel along the road toward Milford Sound, you'll get to enjoy some epic views through the coach's glass-top roof. There'll be plenty of photo stops and the chance to embark on several short walks along the way. Catch incredible views of waterfalls and Mirror Lakes and Eglinton Valley. 

As you drive, enjoy informative commentary about your surroundings. For international visitors, multilingual headsets are available. 

Once you reach Milford Sound, it's time to board the boat and head off on a nature expedition! You'll be travelling on a spacious catamaran with plenty of room to relax and take in the amazing views. 

Visit the open wheelhouse and talk with the skipper, or listen to specialist nature guides tell you about the wildlife and history of the area.

You'll have the chance to see some wildlife on this tour, with plenty of viewing areas around the boat. Keep your eyes open for New Zealand fur seals and bottlenose dolphins that can be sited year round. You'll also get to stand close to the majestic waterfalls that make this area so famous. 

Once you've had your Milford fun, its time to head back onto the bus for your journey home.

It takes approximately five hours to get to Milford from Queenstown depending on the time of year and road conditions.

Milford Sound has an abundance of wildlife and is home to New Zealand fur seals and bottlenose dolphins year round. Rare Dusky dolphins are also known to visit the fiord. The world’s rarest penguin, the Fiordland crested penguin, visits Milford during the breeding season (November) and moulting season (March/April). While there is wildlife in Milford Sound, we can’t guarantee sightings as these are wild animals in their natural habitat. A visit to the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory offers more wildlife viewing with an abundance of sea life below the surface.

There are disabled parking spaces outside the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal building. The only vessel with wheelchair access is Pride of Milford (Milford Sound Scenic Cruise) where access to the vessel is by ramp. There are no wheelchair accessible toilets onboard the vessel, instead these are located in the cruise terminal building.

Due to the changeable nature of the weather in Milford, it’s a good idea to bring a waterproof jacket, warm clothing and wear comfortable shoes. Raincoats are provided for passengers on Encounter Nature Cruises and Discover More Cruises.

Policies
Cancellation Policy:

  • To reduce credit card fraud activity customers must show the credit card that was used for booking online when they check-in.

  • Gift vouchers are non-refundable (other than at the absolute discretion of Southern Discoveries).

  • Pre-paid reservations (bookings) can be altered in accordance with the following:

  • Up until 24 hours prior to the date and time of any pre-paid reservation: you may change (subject to availability) or cancel your booking at no charge by contacting Southern Discoveries directly.

  • Within 24 hours of any scheduled reservation: amendments, partial or full cancellations and ‘no show’ reservations will incur a 100% charge – there will no refund of prepayment. Please note, if  you have cancelled due to illness, we reserve the right to request a medical certificate.

  • In the event that a pre-paid reservation is not utilised by the customer without any communication or notification to Southern Discoveries, this reservation is deemed to have been used.

  • Claims for refunds due to circumstances out of passengers control should be submitted in writing no later than 30 days after the date of departure.

  • Passengers are recommended to insure themselves against cancellation charges and possible loss of personal belongings.

  • Booking amendments, cancellations or refunds cannot be processed online.

  • SDL reserves the right to cancel any cruise at any time due to unsafe weather conditions, vessel maintenance, or not meeting the minimum passenger numbers required to sail.
