Frequently Asked Questions about North Island Mountain Bike Tour - 7 Days
What kind of ascents/descents will we be taking on?
It depends where we go and what tracks we decide to ride each day. We use shuttles/lift on some days as well. The main thing we emphasise is if you're an intermediate or above rider with a good level of fitness our guides will tailor things to work for you.
Do I need experience?
Our tours are aimed all the MTB enthusiasts out there; most of the day’s rides are graded 2-–3+, meaning there might be a few technical sections and/or steep climbs and descents and a couple of long days.
If you have any questions regarding your skills just get in touch with us and we will be able to help you out. Plus we offer MTB Skills Clinics and plenty of guidance on tour for anyone who needs additional help so it's a great opportunity for beginners to quickly advance their skills
How fit do you need to be?
A reasonable level of fitness is required for this active MTB tour. We include some epic and adventurous longer days mixed in with shorter recovery and fun days. If you want to take it easy for a day it's no problem - there are usually a alternative riding options we can sort out.
Do I need to hire a bike? What sort should I bring?
We are able to sort out good quality, late model full suspension or hard-tail bikes for the duration of your tour. Just get in touch!
You can also bring your own. A sturdy full-suspension bike will give you the most enjoyment out of our trips, however, a robust front suspension bike may be fine as well. If you have any questions regarding whether your bike may be suitable for our trips, get in touch and we can help you out.
What do I bring?
- your reliable bike
- personal repairs (spare tubes/tyres/puncture kit/portable pump),
- helmet, riding shoes, gloves, and any protective gear
- sunscreen and sunglasses - the New Zealand sun is pretty strong!
- water bottle/Camelbak (we will let you know where to get water on the trail)
- daily riding snacks
- swimming gear
- daypack
- positive attitude and sense of humour!
Your guides can provide you with a foot bike pump, lights for night riding (if you don’t already have some), and an unforgettable experience with NZ’s best mountain biking.
What's the accommodation like?
We have hand-picked every place we stay, staying in our very own Haka Lodges when possible. Standard accommodation is quad share, with the option to upgrade to a private room.
How many people will be on each tour?
The average group size is 8-12 people and the tour has a max of 16 people with 2 guides. We generally ride in 2 groups of 8 with a guide and split the group according to skill and pace.
What if the weather is bad?
On the rare occasions that any tracks, parks or activities are shut or have very poor conditions, going to a different, but still awesome track is usually the compromise. If not possible, we will refund the wholesale rate for any activity passes for that day.
What's the tour bus like?
We normally use a 22 seater Toyota Coaster, with a trailer for all your gear and bikes. As we only fill the bus to a maximum of 16 people, there are always some extra seats to lounge about
