What to Expect
Take an afternoon to explore some of Hawke's Bay's finest wineries! As New Zealand's second-largest wine region, it boasts a temperate climate and plenty of sunshine with the region best known for its Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux-style red blends.
Your tour starts with pick-ups from anywhere in the Greater Napier area. You'll travel onboard a spacious minibus with your guide, who has 15 years of experience growing grapes and ten years experience as a tour guide - so you'll get to enjoy engaging and informative commentary throughout your tour.
Where we visit
The first stop is Mission Estate Winery, the oldest winery in New Zealand. French missionaries established the vineyard in 1851, making Hawkes Bay the birthplace of New Zealand. The cellar door, where you'll enjoy your tasting, is located in an elegantly restored seminary building with sweeping views of the vineyard.
Next up is gin. The National Distillery Company is located in a picturesque 1930s Art Nouveau building in Ahuriri, an old maritime town. The gin collection is extensive, with options such as New Zealand Dry, Art Deco, Damson Plum, and Verdigris. Many feature New Zealand botanicals for unique and inspiring flavours.
Switching back to wine, visit Urban Winery, Napier's newest and coolest winery. It's home to Tony Bish Wines and boasts spectacular egg-shaped concrete and French oak fermenters, which have revolutionised Chardonnay fermentation. While here, you'll also have the option to taste five Moa craft beers piped in from the Moa Brewery next door.
Linden Estate Winery is the final stop of the tour, and you'll enjoy a seated tasting accompanied by a delicious cheese board. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Esk Valley hill, offering a protected microclimate and incredible views. Varieties grown include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
