This trip starts at Imano Tokyo Ginza Hostel in Chuo City, Tokyo. Travellers touching down at Narita Airport can take the Narita Express train from the airport to Tokyo Station (approx. 60 minutes) and transfer to the JR Keiyo Line to disembark at Hacchobori Station, which is roughly a 7-minute walk from the hostel.

Travellers touching down at Haneda Airport can hop on the Keikyu Airport Line train from the airport to Takaracho Station (approx. 35 minutes), which is roughly a 6-minute walk from the hostel.

This trip finishes at Piece Hostel Sanjo in Kyoto. If you would like to continue your adventures through Japan after your tour finishes, please speak to your tour leader and they will help you with any arrangements to extend your stay.

This is the perfect adventure for young solo travellers looking to make friends! As a more affordable tour, this trip is designed for shared accommodation and does not include a single supplement option. Instead, solo travellers will be paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip.

This trip is specially designed to cater to young, budget-conscious travellers aged between 18 and 39 years old. If this sounds like you and you’re looking to explore the highlights of Japan, then this trip is perfectly suited to your needs!

This tour is suitable for most fitness levels and does not involve any particularly challenging physical exercise. Travellers should note, however, that exploring Tokyo often involves a lot of walking, and it’s not uncommon for buildings here to have a lot of stairs.

Like most countries, Japan requires international travellers to present a valid passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity) before entering the country.

Please visit the Japanese government website, reach out to your local consulate/embassy, or enquire with your travel agent for more information on whether you will need a visa to enter Japan.

It is your own responsibility to have the correct travel documentation. Visa requirements for your trip will vary depending on where you are from and where you are going.

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory on this trip. You will need to select a travel insurance policy that, at a minimum, covers you for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation. A minimum coverage of $200,000 USD is also required. We also strongly recommend that your policy covers you for personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage/personal effects.

From November to April, Japan can be very cold and some areas are snowy, so make sure you pack warm clothes if you are travelling during these months. From June to September, temperatures are high and the air can be very humid, so lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended. As well as weather-appropriate clothing, you’ll also need to pack the following essentials:

  • All necessary travel documents
  • Toiletries (shampoo, body wash, soap, etc.)
  • Camera (with extra memory cards and batteries)
  • Cash, credit and debit cards
  • Day pack (for daily excursions or short overnights)
  • Ear plugs
  • First-aid kit, including any prescription medications (stimulant medications tend to be illegal in Japan. Please check whether you can bring your prescription medicine into the country before you travel.)
  • Flashlight/torch (headlamps are ideal)
  • Comfortable footwear
  • Moneybelt and locks for bags
  • Outlet adapter
  • Personal entertainment (books, diary, playing cards, music player, etc.)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small travel towel
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • Swimwear
  • Watch/alarm clock
  • Waterproof backpack cover
  • Windproof rain jacket
  • Hand sanitiser and face masks
  • Pen (for filling out travel documents)

We recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg (22-30 lbs). All G Adventures tours in Japan use the world-famous Shinkansen bullet trains, which have strict restrictions on maximum luggage size. Your luggage must be less than 160cm in total. This is roughly the size that most airline companies consider "carry-on baggage" and allow in overhead storage compartments.

Japan is one of the most populous countries in the world, meaning space is at a premium and hotel/hostel rooms are often small. Additionally, some Japanese hotels do not have designated non-smoking rooms, but we do ask hotels to deodorise rooms before check-in.

Accommodation will be varied throughout your adventure. Some nights on this tour will be multi-share. This may involve 4-6 group members sharing a room. The majority of accommodation will have shared bathroom facilities.

Where we use multi-share hostels, rooming requests of any kind cannot be taken.

Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink more than others while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip.

Australian travellers will generally find Japan to be quite an affordable country. Even in big cities like Tokyo, a meal out will cost between ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 on average (usually no more than $20 AUD). Souvenirs and other similar purchases also tend to be quite affordable.

Japan is quite reliant on physical cash. As a result, travellers should not rely on their credit/debit cards to make purchases, as many stores/vendors will not accept cards as a form of payment.

ATMs can be found in every post office and 7/11 convenience store in Japan, and money exchange machines are also quite common throughout major cities. However, we do still recommend exchanging your money for Japanese Yen before you depart for your trip, as exchanging it in Japan can be a slow process.
