What to Expect
Looking to make your experience of Haleiwa truly unforgettable? On this tour, you'll get to cage dive with sharks for 2 hours in Oahu. This tour is the only cage diving experience on Oahu’s North Shore owned and operated by native Hawaiians. The boat holds up to six people, and this tour is available daily. Just want to come along for the ride? There are rider rates too if you don’t want to jump in the cage!
The tour begins with a boat ride that travels 3 miles from Hale‘iwa. Your guides will teach you about the importance of sharks to Hawaiian culture and history. They'll even discuss the shark God Kamohoali`i! You'll learn that when sharks were killed in ancient times, the shark’s skin was used to make drums for music and cultural ceremonies. The teeth were used to make traditional weapons like clubs. In fact, everything was used, and the mana (energy) would live on in other forms.
The sacred and culturally significant mano (shark) is a powerful apex predator that the tour is excited to share with visitors and locals alike. Hawai‘i is home to approximately 40 different shark species, all of which serve as caretakers of the ocean by removing sick, injured, and diseased animals, thus maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Not only are sharks essential players in healthy marine life populations, but they are also ‘aumākua to many Hawaiians— a family god, a deified ancestor rebirthed in shark form. There are many beautiful legends in Hawaiian history of sharks acting as spiritual counsellors, protecting family members from drowning or aiding in food supply to fishing families, and even a central figure in the Hawaiian Islands’ creation story.
We won't give too much away — this tour will continue to share Hawaii's history and education about sharks with you! Once you arrive at the dive spot, you'll be able to see up to 200ft (60 m) into the deep, crystal clear ocean! Depending on the season, you may encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, playful dolphins, and humpback whales. After an intro to the cage and safety briefing, you'll jump in and enjoy the shark cage diving tour. Feel free to bring your own masks and snorkels or to get them on board. The shark cage allows you to be inches away from the sharks while still being safe.
Shark cage diving isn't for everybody — if you prefer to stay on board, you still have the opportunity to see the sharks (they're big creatures). These majestic beasts can grow to be more than 15ft (5m) long, and you'll be close enough to witness their graceful demeanour. Make sure to bring your underwater camera and capture impressive photos/videos of the animals. You'll have 20 minutes to watch the sharks and cherish this unforgettable moment. Then the tour departs the dive spots and heads back toward land.
