What to Expect

This 8-day adventure is the perfect taste of the best bits of Australia’s nature. Spend time snorkelling in Turquoise Bay at Ningaloo Reef – keeping an eye out for whale sharks – before heading inland. You’ll pass classic outback scenes of auburn landscape and limitless horizons before arriving at Karijini National Park. Here you'll learn about the ancient culture of the Banyjima, Kurrama, and Innawonga people, the traditional owners of the land. Swim in the secluded natural pools and hike through the vibrant gorges as you disconnect from the world and connect with the land around you.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Exmouth - Ningaloo Reef

Welcome to Exmouth! Check in to your accommodation before meeting your local leader and fellow travellers for a Welcome Meeting at the hotel at 11 am, then get to know everyone a little better over an included lunch. After lunch, the tour explores the town and the surrounding areas with a local guide. Kick things off with a walk around the township, then venture into Cape Range National Park. Here, your guide will introduce you to a world of ancient gorges and glittering coastline.

The tour then visits Turquoise Bay. With pristine white sands and bright blue waters, this is undoubtedly one of the world’s most breathtaking beaches. Take a dip in the clear waters and snorkel over the coral reef gardens that lie beneath the surface. Stop at lookout points where you can enjoy the scenery and marvel at the iconic Ningaloo reef. After an exciting afternoon, join your fellow travellers for dinner at a local brewery in the evening and reminisce about the day’s discoveries over a tasty meal and craft beer.

This morning after breakfast you’ll be donning your swimmers for a day on the water. If you opt for the latter, you’ll hire snorkel gear and enter the water at the southern end of the beach, where the current will naturally take you down the length of the beach with views of the marine life and colourful coral underneath. This evening is free to enjoy as you wish – your local leader has plenty of recommendations for the best places to enjoy a fresh seafood dinner, so don’t hesitate to ask them.

Special information: It is very important that you pre-book any Whale Shark experiences prior to departure, as this can sell out in advance due to popularity. Please note that the currents at Turquoise Bay can be strong and you are advised against undertaking any snorkelling here unless you have booked this experience with an experienced guide.

  • A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travellers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn't an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance only, and don't include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability, and maybe on a join-in basis. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. For most, they can either be organised independently on the day, or let your leader know you are interested in the Group Meeting and they can assist. Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials have been sighted and assessed.
  • On most days, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be included. Your leader will prepare most of the meals whilst on tour. This tour is activity and participation-based. You will have the opportunity to assist with daily activities such as setting up camp, helping prepare meals and clearing dishes. None of this is difficult however many hands make light work and any assistance provided to crew is always much appreciated. Most people agree that this type of activity helps you feel like less of a tourist and more of an explorer. All food for this trip is purchased and packed prior to your group leaving on day one. You may be asked to pay for any additional food if you have not advised us of any special dietary requirements. Due to the often remote nature of our trips, food is basic but plentiful and delicious. The tour can provide easily available substitutes, please bring your own staples (nuts, bars, snacks) if you require a diet differing from the following. Vegetarian Gluten Free Dairy Free (soy available ) Pork Free
  • While the tour always endeavours to provide the best possible holiday experience, due to the nature of travel and the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong. Should any issue occur while you are on your trip, it is imperative that you discuss this with your group leader or our local representative straight away so that they can do their best to rectify the problem and save any potential negative impact on the rest of your trip.

  • GROUP LEADER: All group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects.
  • SAFETY: Most national governments provide regularly updated foreign travel advice on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip.
  • TRAVELLING IN A GROUP: As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. The very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.
  • SOLO TRAVELLERS: The tour pairs solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per your passport or the information in our booking system, so if you identify differently from the gender marker on your passport, please let us know in advance. The tour has a Single Supplement available on most trips for travellers who prefer to have their own room.
