What to Expect

Nature called you to Costa Rica — now here you are, suspended in the jungle canopy, locking eyes with a curious monkey. This action-packed tour of Costa Rica’s highlights is perfect for the adventurer with limited time who wants to explore the region’s diversity. The flexible inclusions let you get your adrenaline pumping, follow a trail to the base of a waterfall, melt away in thermal springs, or relax on a beach — your CEO (Chief Experiences Officer) will help you find the secluded spots only the locals know.

An eco-tourist's dream, Costa Rica has become synonymous with all an unspoiled tropical paradise can be. Rarely does reality measure up to the hype, but Costa Rica certainly comes close. The country's quiet history as a backwater free of colonial excesses has today become a boon, and Costa Rica has cashed in on its purity. And not without merit: blessed with beaches and biodiversity, this is a verdant land of misty volcanoes, roaring rivers, and lush jungles teeming with exotic fauna. Throw in the friendly, educated Ticos (as Costa Ricans are known), and you can see why down here they call it Pura Vida – "pure life."

Day 1 – San Jose

Say goodbye to your routine life and hi to your adventurous journey that begins today once you arrive at San Jose anytime before 11:59 pm. Check in to the hotel and relax until evening, when you'll get yourself introduced to all the fellow travellers at the introductory meet with the CEO. Then, have a good night sleep and get yourself charged for the trip.

Day 2 – San Jose to La Fortuna

Get up early and get ready to travel by a shared van to La Fortuna. Along the way, visit the Mi Cafecito coffee cooperative in San Miguel de Sarapiqui, see shade-grown coffee plants, learn about everything from harvesting to husking, drying, and roasting the beans before enjoying the best part – a fresh cup! Next, enjoy a typical lunch of plantains, beans, and freshly caught tilapia fish. Finally, feel good about all this eating and drinking, knowing that you are supporting a project that helps 200 farmers and their families.

On arrival in La Fortuna, you'll check into the hotel. Then, if you don’t feel tired and want to utilize your time in something adventurous, join the included Hot Springs Soak. Relax in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano immersed in therapeutic waters heated by the earth’s magma and infused with healing minerals and salts. Rejuvenate your muscles, detox your cells, and stimulate all your senses in nature’s thermal spa. Breathe in the pure rainforest air and marvel at the mystic surroundings of these outdoor pools of paradise.

Other optional activities for the day include white-water rafting, a stand-up paddleboard lesson and tour, or a Lost Canyon Adventure.

Day 3 – La Fortuna

Today is a free day to spend at your disposal, with a range of optional activities available (not included). Opt for La Fortuna Waterfall Swim, where the water cascades 65m (200 ft) down the side of the dormant Cerro Chato. Take a Canopy Tour, do horse riding, or visit the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. See the Hanging Bridges and join the monkeys and perhaps spot a sloth lazing in the treetops of this protected rainforest that’s set in the shadows of the Arenal Volcano. Alternatively, get the adrenaline flowing with white water rafting or mountain biking.

Day 4 – La Fortuna to Monteverde

Travel by bus and boat through Arenal and the stunning Costa Rican scenery up to Monteverde, arriving in the afternoon. This is a nature lover's paradise.

Take an included Cloud Forest Night Walk to learn about nocturnal life in the jungle firsthand. Join a naturalist guide for a 1 hr 30 min to 2-hr tour in the cloud forest after dark. Learn more about the habits of the area's nocturnal wildlife, including mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians, and keep your eyes and ears open on this slow-paced walk. You never know what you might see – it depends on the day and your luck!

Day 5 – Monteverde

Enjoy a free day to explore the cloud forest region of Costa Rica; there's plenty to see and do. Optional activities include the Sky Walk, a series of suspension bridges through the jungle canopy, a butterfly garden, and a thrilling canopy zip line. Alternatively, go horseback riding or step back in time on an El Trapiche Tour. The local guides are extremely knowledgeable about the area and passionate about the conservation of this precious ecosystem.

Day 6 – Monteverde to Quepos

Travel to Quepos, just outside Manuel Antonio National Park, on the Pacific Coast. Enjoy free time on the afternoon of your arrival to play in the waves of this chilled-out surf town, explore Manuel Antonio National Park, or dance the night away.

Day 7 – Quepos

With a full day of free time, you can choose to spend it however you like. Enjoy Quepos or opt to visit Manuel Antonio National Park. The park offers excellent hiking, spectacular views, abundant wildlife viewing, beautiful white-sand beaches and warm turquoise water.

Join in other optional activities (not included), such as a Manuel Antonio Catamaran Tour along the Pacific coast, a kayak or surfing lesson, or take an exciting whitewater rafting trip along the river through Class II–V rapids.

Day 8 – Quepos – San Jose

You've got another morning to yourself before the bus journey back to the capital and your final night. So relax on the beach or grab some last-minute souvenirs.

Day 9 – San Jose

Waking up back in the capital, you're free to depart at any time with lots of memories to cherish.

We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying and handling your own luggage.

We keep our group sizes low so you have the freedom to move around and get involved with your surroundings, as well as more personal attention from our local guides. This intimate size ensures that your group will not crowd your experience. You can expect up to 15 travelers on a trip but the average is 10. Check individual trip pages for maximum group sizes.

Tips are not included in the tour price and tipping is entirely at your discretion.

It is customary in Latin America to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is an expected - though not compulsory - component of your tour program and an expression of satisfaction with the persons who have assisted you on your tour. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. There are several times during the trip where there is an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $5-10 USD per day depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture.

Tipping of your Chief Experience Officer is very much appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline $5-7 USD per person, per day is our recommendation in the region. However, if you felt your CEO did an especially outstanding job, any additional amount will always be welcome.
