WHAT TO EXPECT
Spend a full day exploring the best sights in and around Alice Springs. First up in the morning, you’re headed for the beautiful West MacDonnell Ranges, which stretch over 600 km east and west of Alice Springs. Along the way, your Driver Guide will point out significant landmarks and share details of the region’s history and rich culture. The first stop is John Flynn’s Grave. It’s located just outside Alice Springs and is the resting place for the ashes of the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Next, it’s onto the ranges. Here you’ll explore Simpsons Gap, walking through the towering cliffs to the waterhole, keeping an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies. A short drive away is Angkerle (Standley Chasm), where you can wander along its stony watercourse, keeping an eye out for birds and wildlife that inhabit the area. You’ll also enjoy a spot of morning tea while you’re here, before returning to Alice Springs.
Back in town, learn how it’s evolved into the central hub of the Australian outback. Visit historical sites and some of the essential services delivered from Alice to the community of this vast region.
The first stop is the School of the Air, which provides education to primary-school-aged children living in remote areas. Then, it’s onto the Telegraph Station, which was the first site of European settlement in Alice Springs. It relayed messages between Darwin and Adelaide for 60 years as part of the Overland Telegraph Line.
Later in the afternoon take a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which delivers medical services to those living in remote areas. It’s an important lifeline and essential for keeping communities connected. After, it’s off to encounter goannas, frill-neck lizards and Terry the saltwater crocodile at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre.
The final stop in your day-long adventure is Anzac Hill. From here you’ll take in breathtaking, panoramic views of Alice Springs and the West MacDonnell Ranges. It’s the perfect end to a wonderful day in The Outback.
