Why do we love this
We think the opportunity to learn authentic flower arrangement in Japan is pretty cool. After all, there's nothing that immerses you more in a country's culture than learning a new skill!
What to Expect
Japan is full of beauty, delicate details, pretty patterns and intricate designs. An aesthetic full of ancient ideals like wabi (transient and stark beauty), sabi (the beauty of natural patina and ageing), and yugen (profound grace and subtlety), Japanese culture is a treasure just waiting to be discovered.
Delve into this spectacular world of culture and traditions as you learn traditional flower arrangement in an Ikebana course. Since you've travelled all the way to Japan, it would be a waste not to experience this incredible culture!
The Japanese art of flower arrangement, ikebana, meaning living flowers, is a tradition that dates back to the 7th century. It may seem like a complex and specialised art form, but this isn't the case. By the end of this course, you'll have created your own stunning 'living flower' piece!
While you learn ikebana, you'll also gain a better understanding of the Japanese view of nature and the history of this art form.
Your day starts with an introduction to the essentials of ikebana and its history and background. Flower arranging used to be a required "mannerism" for well-educated men, such as samurais or monks and began as floral offerings made at altars.
Next, you'll watch a basic demonstration and instruction to prepare you for creating your own ikebana work. Watch as your teacher shows you the basics of arranging and displaying each flower and petal before attempting your own design.
Finally, delve into the hands-on aspect of the class! Craft your own floral piece and truly experience this unique part of Japanese culture.
Your teacher will be available if you need some help throughout the process.
This is a 1.5-hour class. It runs Mon, Wed, Friday 10:00 am - 11:30 am and Tues, Thurs, Saturday 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
