Why Do We Love This
"We love it because Sail Barbary yachts are eco-friendly!"
What to Expect
Set sail for an adventure like no other at the Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings on Great Lake Taupo. These Maori Carvings are most likely the largest type of their type in the world, at over 14-metres high – you've really got to see them, to believe them!
What makes the carvings even cooler is that they are only accessible by boat... so that's where Sail Barbary comes in. With over 34 years of experience, Sail Barbary knows Taupo Moana (Lake Taupo) like the back of their hand.
On board their lovingly restored classic, white sailing yacht you'll feel truly at home. Listen as your experienced guide explains the cultural significance behind the carvings and offers you some incredible picture post card moments. Get your cameras at the ready and don't forget to #maorirockcarvings! Feel free to BYO (Bring Your Own) food and drink in true kiwi fashion – is there anything better than popping a cold one as you soak up the sun?
Also, Sail Barbary are all about getting hands on, so if you're after a bit of sailing action we'd love you to help hoist the sails and have a go at steering the wheel. Plus, if the wind dies down Sail Barbary's eco-friendly electric engine will kick in and have you sailing silently across the water. They also provide warm ponchos to keep you cosy - what pros.

No. We sail with guests who have never sailed before, some have never even been on a boat before. We can control the experience using the sails so will look after you well. If you prefer a real sailing adventure, then come on board when the wind is up and enjoy sailing without salt sea spray or nosiy outboard motors.
We're equpped for all conditions - if the wind dies down, Sail Barbary's quiet eco-friendly, electric engine kicks in. For times when we need the motor Barbary produces no pollution and moves noiselessly through the water without the heat, vibration and fumes that accompany conventional powered vessels. We strive to deliver the best eco-friendly and natural Kiwi experience - one cruise at a time!
Sail Barbary is the perfect way to showcase this beautiful part of New Zealand all-year-round, and our TripAdvisor reviews reflect this. Our passion for our unique boats, what we do, the Great Lake we operate on and the awesome town in which we live is second to none - we want to share this passion with you!
On the lake, Mother Nature ensures that every trip is different. Each season of the year brings different conditions. Sometimes the sailing is easy, sometimes it rains, sometimes there is not enough wind for us to use the sails and we use our quiet eco-friendly electric engine. But which ever way it happens it always works out great.
There's always a possibility that a rain shower might arrive. We suggest you bring a shower-proof jacket. However, we have custom-made, fleece-lined, water-proof ponchos available for use on board, and there is always the option of going below decks in the cabin for a while. If heavy rain is forecast we are unlikely to sail. We sometimes experience a shower of (fresh water) spray when we are sailing along. It an be quite a lot of fun but we don't over do this!
No, but it is good if you tell us you can't swim. We might ask you to wear a life vest while on deck during sailing. Wehave never had anyone fall over the side and we are not about to start!
Layered clothing and appropriate, comfortable shoes, shower/wind-proof jacket, swimwear & towel (summer only), sun cream, hat, sunglasses & camera.
