What to Expect

This unique food and wine experience departing from your Port Douglas accommodation is a chance to taste some of the best food and wine that the Atherton Tablelands has to offer.

The tour will take you through various contrasting landscapes from lush rainforest, crops, dairyland to stunning ochre savannah plains. The rich volcanic soil allows farmers to grow diverse crops, including bananas, coffee, sugar cane, avocados, mangoes, macadamia nuts, and citrus, which you will learn about as you taste your way around the region. 

Take in the beautiful views on this fascinating and tasty journey through a gem of Far North Queensland, with seven stops along the way.

 

Stop 1: Emerald Creek Icecreamery 

You may think that it's strange to have ice cream for breakfast but this is worth a try! Enjoy a plate of seasonal tropical fruits served with pikelets and homemade jam. Plus, two scoops of locally made ice cream and sorbet from the Emerald Creek Icecreamery. 

 

Stop 2:  The Humpty Nut World Tropical Fruits & Nuts Tasting 

Next up, the tour stops in at ‘The Humpy’, the best place to go to for freshly harvested Atherton Tablelands produce straight from the growers. From vegetables to tropical fruits and hundreds of different varieties of nuts, dried fruits locally produced jams and sauces. Taste seasonal fruits and many different flavours of hot local peanuts and macadamia nuts. We leave you time to browse this amazing and quirky grocery store so you can purchase goodies for the rest of your stay.

 

Stop 3: Australian Platypus Park for a Gourmet Lunch

I hope you've saved some room for more tasty local produce as you visit the Australian Platypus Park – home to a thriving platypus population. These wonderful creatures can be found in a spring fed pond surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. In order to create a natural environment for the development of the platypus, plants are naturally grown in accordance with the habitat of the platypus. Take a wander down to see them in this magnificent setting then sit down to enjoy flavoured handcrafted smoked products, combined with a unique blend of local Australian native herbs and spices.

After exploring the property, you will get to try some more local produce over lunch including crocodile, red claw (yabby) and kangaroo with fresh local salads topped off with a ‘Tarzali Lakes’ boutique beer, Dragon Fruit cider, Lemon Myrtle tea. (Menu EXCLUSIVE to our tour.) Tihere will be tme to purchase some of the smoked products and sauces before departing. 

 

Stop 4: Gallo Dairyland cheese and chocolate tasting

With full bellies, you'll now head towards the historic village of Atherton. Driving through this thriving hub, a patchwork of excellent farmland and rolling green hills appear before you. This journey will take you to a fully operational dairy farm, Gallo Dairyland, spread across 1000 acres of rich red volcanic soil with delicious handcrafted chocolates and a gourmet cheese factory.

You can buy the delicious cheeses that we have just tasted and sample irresistible Swiss style filled chocolates that are a work of art whilst gazing out over the picturesque landscape. Meet some friendly animals before heading back to Mareeba through various diverse crops.

 

Stop 5: Billy Cart Brewery 

Billycart Brewing Co. is a locally owned and independent brewery in Atherton, their taproom caters for the adventurous craft beer drinker as well as those who just love a cold beer at the end of the day. At the brewery, their beers are served metres from where they are crafted. They produce 1000 litres batches so there are always new freshly brewed beer styles catering to your tastes.

 

Stop 6: Mount Uncle Distillery Liquers & Spirits Tastings

Just 10 minutes down the road you'll arrive at Mount Uncle Distillery, North Queensland's first and only distillery. Enjoy a delicious fresh lunch of local produce, then head to the distillery to taste some of their award-winning liqueurs and spirits. Gluten-free or vegetarian lunch and lactose-free cheese are available on request.

Finally, stretch your legs with a wander around this stunning property nestled in coffee and banana plantations, with beautiful gardens and some friendly animals.

 

Stop 7: Platypus Hut

The last stop but not least! Platypus Hut is a sanctuary for bird & animal species. Watch out for passing kangaroos and head down to 'The Platypus Hut'. Keep an eye out for dive-bombing Kingfishers and the elusive Platypus (or dip your toes into the most beautiful mountain stream) while tasting some Queensland wines & beer, Macadamia nut butter and local bread.
