Port Douglas - Things to do

Port Douglas is located in the far northeast of Australia. This town of 3500 people in the state of Queensland is blessed with a year-round balmy climate and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites just around the corner: the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, the latter as being a part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

The town of Port Douglas itself has several sights as well, ranging from historic architecture to natural features. Check out the old Flagstaff Hill Lighthouse and the fantastic ocean views, soak up the sun at the legendary Four Mile Beach, or see native Australian animals at the Wildlife Habitat. Get face to face with iconic Aussie inhabitants like koalas and kangaroos!

One of the major attractions around Port Douglas is the Kuranda Scenic Train. The tourist train on this picturesque railway passes by the lush rainforests, waterfalls, and deep canyons. Combine this scenic train ride with the epic Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, a gondola journey which provides with breathtaking views of the woodlands.

If you’re aiming to tackle some biking or hiking trails, head out for a visit to Mowbray National Park and explore the forest floor and stunning creeks. More outdoor adventures can be found in nearby Mount Lewis National Park, a reserve that’s praised for its biodiversity and ancient trees. There are heaps of outdoor trips waiting for you!

Port Douglas is also an excellent place for cultural experiences. Learn more about the Aboriginal culture during a Tjapukai night tour, which features dance, indigenous food, and fire ceremonies. An amazing way to gain knowledge and even have a chat with the Aboriginal people!

Port Douglas is only an hour drive away from Cairns, the city that’s considered to be the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. From Cairns, you can hop on board of a boat for a diving day-trip to this legendary reef system, discover the beautiful waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands, or book a thrilling white water rafting tour of the Barron River.

It’s even possible to make an astonishing skydive from Cairns, an Aussie affair you won’t ever forget!
