Itinerary:
Day 1 - Darwin - Edith Falls - Victoria River - bush camp
The sun rises early in the Kimberley so there’s no point in sleeping in! You’ll be picked up from your Darwin accommodation at 6.00 am and head for the wilderness. Your destinations is the Kimberley's, considered to be one of the last great expanses of rugged wilderness areas remaining in the world.
Your first stop, Edith Falls in Katherine Gorge National Park, is about 2 hours south of Darwin. A short 3 km walk to the upper pools will reward you with a beautiful waterfall. You'll also call into the Katherine Township and visit Victoria River.
After lunch, push west towards the Western Australia/Northern Territory state border. Here, you'll set up your first bush camp. Camping spots on this trip are normally in pristine wilderness and remote areas which adds to the adventure. Setting up a campfire, cooking up a feast and then rolling out the swags in these places is a special experience! Tents are provided for those a little nervous about the under the stars experience.
You'll be swimming and hiking 3km - 5km today.
Day 2 - Victoria River - Lake Argyle - bush camp
Enjoy the natural wakeup this morning! Rise early and head off nice and early for the day's activities. Start off exploring the Victoria River Valley, a great destination with a number of hikes to choose from.
From there, head to Lake Argyle, a huge freshwater lake teeming with wildlife, from wallabies in the rocky shores, to freshwater crocodiles to birdlife.
Board a boat with a local guide and learn more about the area as they show you the lake. There's time to swim before watching the sunset from the water.
Tonight you'll camp on one of the remote islands. You'll be the only people on a single island in the middle of one of the most remote lakes in the world! It's an unforgettable night.
You'll swim and hike for approx 3km today.
Day 3 - Lake Argyle - Kununurra - Purnululu National Park - bush camp
The sunrise from your island camp is unforgettable. Soak up the rays then pack up camp, re-board the boat and head back to the vehicle.
From Lake Argyle, head into Kununurra to replenish supplies. Take the opportunity to catch up on the world with some free time in this classic outback town.
Next, it's onto one of the highlights of this Kimberley trip, Purnululu National Park, more commonly known as the Bungle Bungles. Your time in this region is spent hiking and exploring the Gorges and amazing landscapes.
The long and dusty track into the Bungles is spectacular; it winds its way through valleys, over ranges and through creeks before arriving at one of the world’s most unique landscapes. The day ends with a spectacular sunset from a vantage point at camp.
You'll walk approximately 1 - 2km today.
Day 4 - Purnululu National Park - Cathedral Gorge - Echidna Chasm - bush camp
Get ready for an early start today, as you take advantage of a spectacular Bungle Bungles sunrise. Watch the show a cup of tea or coffee and breakfast from your unique vantage point.
Afterwards, a short drive from the sunrise area takes you to the trailhead for the Cathedral Gorge hike. This is a spectacular hike through the beehive formations to Cathedral Gorge. The gorge itself is even more stunning!
From here, there's the opportunity to take a scenic flight over the Bungles. Scenic flights are at your own expense and organised on the day.
Later, you'll head off to Echidna Chasm for a hike into the domes. Enjoy wandering as you follow a creek to its source along at a narrow passage buried within the Bungles.
After lunch, depart Purnululu and head to your bush camp. Tonight you'll sleep on a lovely creek with a sandy beach.
Hiking length is approximately 5km today.
Day 5 - Gibb River Road - El Questro Station - Emma Falls - bush camp
Hit the dirt track today and head along the famous Gibb River Road, a 700km long outback road which runs between Derby and Kununurra. The track is often rough and there are a number of deep water crossings to tackle! It's a journey of excitement with vast tracts of wilderness and numerous rivers, gorges and waterfalls to explore.
Your first stop is El Questro Station, home to many beautiful landscapes, one of which is Emma Falls. A hike through a spectacular gorge leads to a very high and narrow waterfall with a deep cool plunge pool for a swim.
From here it’s back on the “The Gibb” where you'll continue your westerly trek. Arriving at the Pentecost River you'll be presented with an incredible landscape of a wide river surrounded by the Cockburn Ranges, a classic Kimberley scene.
Tonight, another bush camp and classic Kimberley sunset await at the foot of the rugged Cockburn Ranges.
Hiking and swimming time approximately 5km today.
Day 6 - Pentecost River - Ellenbrae Cattle Station - Manning Gorge - bush camp
Start the driving off today with a trek through the Pentecost River. Driving a vehicle across a 60 metre wide outback river which is occupied by salt water crocodiles is not something you do every day! It’s only way through so across you go.
You're travelling west today, checking out secluded waterholes and Ellenbrae Cattle Station along the way.
Later, you'll arrive at Manning Gorge. Camp tonight is either at Manning Gorge, where toilets and showers are available or back into the bush depending on the preference of your guide.
Hiking and swimming length is approximately 2 - 3km today.
Day 7 - Manning Gorge - Galvans Gorge - bush camp
Another day of adventure awaits. From camp, head off on a hike along a white sandy stretch. A Pandanus tree-lined waterway opens into a wide clear waterhole only minutes in. You'll have to swim across the river before following a trail leading to the top of the gorge. Once across, you'll discover a waterfall plus a wide swimming hole that's surrounded by granite cliffs and rock outcrops. It is a spectacular setting with hidden examples of Bradshaw Aboriginal Rock Art.
After a dip, embark on the return route which is a little less conventional and will have you swimming and rock hopping along the creek.
Depending on the time available, you'll also visit Galvans Gorge. Afterwards, locate your bush camp and set up for another night under the stars.
You'll be hiking and swimming up to 8km today.
Day 8 - Bell Gorge - Adcock Gorge - bush camp
Another day, another amazing waterfall to explore! The main stop for today day is Bell Gorge.
Here, after a 15-minute walk, you'll come to a beautiful creek, which flows through the centre of this impressive gorge. It cascades over numerous falls and into a deep swimming hole at the base. It's an ideal lunch spot.
Later, if time permits, you also drop into Adcock Gorge.
Your last wilderness bush camp for the tour offers a classic Kimberley sunset and camping among the boab trees.
You'll hike and swim around 4 km today.
Day 9 - Tunnel Creek - Widjana Gorge - Broome - Cable Beach
By now you'll be an expert on waking up early! Your first spot to explore today is Tunnel Creek. This is an amazing natural phenomenon and holds great significance for the local Aboriginal people. It's a 750 metre long stretch of creek, which runs underground through one of the oldest cave systems in Western Australia. Getting there early normally guarantees you'll have the place to yourselves.
Look out for Aboriginal rock paintings in the cave. It was a hideout of the Aboriginal warrior, Jandamarra in 1897!
Next, head to Windjana Gorge, a huge gorge cut into the ranges over a millennium revealing beautiful scenery of high vertical cliffs, sandy beaches and winding creek. You'll head off on a hike here, for about 2 - 4km. You'll see plenty of freshwater crocodiles swimming in the clear waterholes.
From Windjana Gorge, check out the Boab Prison Tree near Derby. From here, you'll start to make your way into Broome, arriving around 6.00 pm. Head for Cable Beach to soak up the last amazing sunset of the tour. Your guide will then drop you at your accommodation.
