First-time skydiving tips
So you’ve decided to take the dive - now what?
Skydiving for the first time is undeniably a daunting experience, however, during a tandem skydive you’ll literally have the support and guidance of your instructor with you every step (and jump) along the way!
Be sure to listen and adhere to all safety instructions and advice given prior to the jump, as this will ensure you remain as safe as possible (and may even settle your nerves a little!).
The pros also suggest eating a decent meal a few hours before skydiving and remaining extra hydrated - to prevent feeling nauseous or dizzy both on the flight up and during the dive itself! Oh…and avoid alcohol between 24 and 12 hours before the jump - we’d hate for you to feel woozy!
As for what to wear when you go skydiving, it’s best to check the weather first on the day of your dive, but generally speaking, choose well fitted clothing, including footwear. If you’re unsure about how cold you’ll be when up in the air, just see how you feel on the ground and expect to feel the same, or even colder, in the sky.
It is completely normal to be feeling nervous about your dive…especially if it’s your first time! But that’s what makes our skydiving suppliers so wonderful - they’re the best in the business for a reason and that’s because they’re experts in keeping you safe and ensuring you have a great time!
Part of keeping you safe means that unfortunately some people are unable to dive, including those with heart conditions, back and/or neck issues and pregnant women. There are also weight limitations in place so for those who exceed 94kg (or approx. 207lbs), please contact the supplier prior to booking to ensure you’re good to jump.
As for the jump itself - prepare for the adrenaline rush of your life! Your instructor will give you instructions as to exactly what to do and ensure you’re strapped in properly, but be sure to remember the following tips for your first skydive:
1. Be a banana
Arching your body like a banana during falling helps to improve the skydiving experience by ensuring your body is positioned correctly against your tandem skydive buddy!
2. Lift those legs
To help get you and your tandem partner to the ground as safely as possible: raise those legs! Your instructor needs to be the first to touch the ground, as they know exactly how to plant the stand, properly bear the weight and land without any hiccups. If you forget to raise your legs, your feet can get in your partner’s way which may cause injuries!
Aside from what to wear, what to do, when to go etc. there’s possibly the most important tip of all when it comes to skydiving for the first time…bring some support!
Although you can’t jump out of the plane at the exact same time as your friends…you can ride up on the plane together and encourage each other along the way!
Or, for those with friends less willing to participate, they can always wait down below in the drop-zone for you to land. Regardless, skydiving is a memorable experience for all involved and all the more reason to get booking!
