Uluru - Things to do

To the Aboriginal people, Uluru or Ayers Rock is one of the most sacred places in Australia. This massive sandstone rock formation is located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the state of Northern Territory, almost 500 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs.

Uluru is surrounded by the so-called Red Centre, the sandy heart of Australia which deals with an extreme climate. In summer (November to February), temperatures can shoot up to over 40 degrees, while the winter months (June to August) can bring freezing temperatures at night!

There are many ways to explore the spiritual heart of Australia, and most of them are on the land. But if you want a real spectacular adventure, you can book a skydive above Uluru from 12,000 feet. Float atop of the vast stretches of desert, and see the stunning formations of Uluru and Kata Tjuta from a whole new perspective.

An equally breathtaking alternative is a scenic helicopter flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta, which gives you an impression of the actual scale of these monuments!

The 4-day tour of Uluru and Kings Canyon is the most thorough trip in this area. You’ll get to see sunrise and sunset around the mythical rock formation, discover waterholes and Aboriginal artworks, and walk through the majestic Kings Canyon.

In case you have less time to spend in this magical desert landscape, you can book on an Uluru camping tour for 2 days. This way you get to sleep under the galaxy, and still see highlights such as Uluru, Kata Tjuta, the Mutitjulu Waterhole, and the Aboriginal Cultural Centre. This is a more than compelling way to delve into Australia’s Red Centre.

This area is well-known for its Aboriginal rock art, and you’ll have a chance to create your own artworks accompanied by Anangu people. Book a dot painting workshop, and you’ll hear stories, learn about the arts, and even learn some words in the language of the Anangu.

If Alice Springs is your next destination after Uluru, you can join a 3-day tour starting Uluru and finish in Alice Springs.
